The money issue-Most people need cash-so either do it your bank or at the airport. While they charge fees it is lower then the hotels. Best place to exchange is at the local bank I totally agree. Your bank card will also give you a great exchange rate if you use it at an atm machine or as a credit card -- only beware that some cities/villages don't have ATM machines or accept plastic. Airport exchange rates aren't that great either in general. Also it's a better exchange rate to exchange OUT OF the local currency instead of INTO it when you are in a given country.
